WHY KAMALANI
ACADEMY?

Kamalani Academy is PUBLIC charter school. Meaning regular DOE schools are administered by the State Department of Education. A Charter school is authorized by the Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission and reports to the Commission. Charter schools are public schools governed by a local Governing Board of volunteer members of the community and a contract between the school and the Commission. Charter schools must meet all the same academic requirements and many of the same regulations as DOE schools. Charter schools are generally given more leeway to innovate than DOE schools.

Kamalani is a small school (311 students,) conceived, started, and governed by a group of passionate educators, businesspeople, and others from our community. We offer an innovative arts integration, Hawaiian-focused curriculum based on highly successful models here and on the mainland. Kamalani is a Leader in Me School. Leader in Me is an evidence-based, comprehensive-school improvement model—developed in partnership with educators—that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century.” Kamalani is already deeply involved in the Wahiawa/Central Oahu community and the community is invited to be a part of Kamalani.

Prospective
Parents & Students

The need behind the Kamalani Academy Vision is well described by the eminent educator Dr. Linda Darling Hammond of Stanford University:

“The new mission of schools is to prepare students to work at jobs that do not yet exist, creating ideas and solutions for products and problems that have not yet been identified, using technologies that have not yet been invented. We must teach our way out.”

In the years ahead, it will not be enough to know math, science, and reading. Those who are successful will be able to deal with an increasingly rapid rate of change where the future will be unknown. Already, employers are saying that their most valuable employees are those who are flexible, creative, persistent, communicate well, listen, and can work in teams. Our Vision is to have our students learn these “soft skills” through arts integrated education.

Kamalani’s Vision is “To create a space where children become leaders, prepared for a Twenty-First Century we cannot even imagine.”
